Before beginning your efforts to rescue the
General for the Jarl of Strumford you may want to obtain the loot from the
Black Chest here. It does not upset the guards in the least.

Rescue the General & Aontoni
There are several approaches to completing the Quest to rescue Strumford's
greatest General. This will discuss the direct approach.
It will be necessary to tell a few little
white lies to the Guard at the Sign In Desk (1). He doesn't appear to
be the brightest star in the night sky if ya know what I mean. Sign up for
a Visitor's Pass at the desk and then saunter about the prison until you
run into the cook (2). Having ulterior motives he will agree to aid you
only if you agree to rescue his brother.
He will unlock the cow's pen (3) so you have
access to a hidden door (4) that leads to a ladder to the uppermost level
of the prison where the "important" prisoners are kept.
You will arrive on the top floor under
a trap door (6) with an anvil atop it. Leave this room and head for the cells
holding the General (7) and the Cook's brother Aontoni (8). The guards
leave the control station and start to make their rounds or enter the "break
room" at the end of the hall. Make your way into the control room and the
levers (L).
Facing the levers pull the lever to the
extreme right, skip one, then pull the next one. This opens the two cell doors
you are interested in. (You can flip all the levers if you like, they just
open the other empty cells on the block.) As long as no guards are visible
speak to Aontoni and convince him he is free. He will run off
and you will have received your bonus for this little side quest.
When the coast is clear and no guards
are around to see you speak to the General and let him know you are here to
rescue him. Head quickly back to the anvil trap door (6) and descend the ladder.
Once back in the kitchen head to the secret door (5) and open it to find
a ladder to the prison sub level.
You can make your way directly to the
trapdoor (T) and descend the ladder there leading to the rope dangling from
the well (W) or you can take your time and nose about. Don't worry about
the General he will remain with you no matter what you do in here. Once you
leave the prison he tells you he'll meet you in the Tavern in Strumford.
Don't forget to pop in there and pick him up when you return to Bjarni with
the good news.
In this level there are a lot of trash
piles, some chests, and a stat barrel that may prove useful to you as long
as you don't mind squashing a bunch of bugs to get to them.
Performing the quest in this fashion
a very low level party could accomplish this early in the game for the nice
exp and gold bonus it nets you. Just don't tangle with the rooms full of bugs
or you'll be the ones that get squashed.
And for those of you who are wondering,
you can come in here and slaughter everything that moves and it will not affect
your relations with the Drangheim Jarl. You can also come in through this
Well and sneak about the prison to make things more interesting.
Side note: It seems there are many places
in the game where you need to climb or swim through holes and you really need
to line yourself up just right to actually get through the hole. This Well
exit here is one of those. It took a few tries to get the right angle but
it will work.
